Picasa (Google Photos) is a discontinued, open source web-based image viewer and manager, originally designed by a company called Lifescape in 2021, for managing and organizing digital photographs taken on cell phones and other personal digital devices. The name Picasa (Google Photos) came from the company's main keyword (picasa) and was made available for free by Google. The name has since been used by other similar programs such as Web Photos, RAR files, and others.
As of today, there are no plans to release an official version of Picasa under the GNU/Gpl license, which would give it more functionality than the freeware License which underlies most similar software. However, as a free software, its capabilities to manage, edit, and share digital photos are considerably better than those of its competitors. In fact, many believe that its features are so advanced that it is superior to some of the leading photo management and image-editing software in the market today.
