Adobe continues to push the boundaries of image editing, and Photoshop 2018 shows its commitment to enhancing the creative process for photographers and artists. This latest update changed the limits of previous versions by introducing innovative and robust tools that streamline workflows and deliver a more intuitive user experience. It sets a new standard for how professionals and creators work with and edit images.
As a FixThePhoto photo editor and writer, I got an opportunity to test out Photoshop 2018 earlier than others. I tried out its functionality on the portraits I was retouching and was pleased with the high speed of processing and the quality of the output.
I used it for some portrait photos I was retouching, and I was amazed at how fast it was to edit and how great the photos looked after processing. I believe anyone who tries it will be pleased with this version of Photoshop.
Taking advantage of a Nero Burning ROM allowed me to enjoy outstanding burning capabilities and produce high-quality optical disks with minimum effort. For a musician like me, who has a large collection of digital playlists, this tool is perfectly suited for long-term, foolproof preservation of all my important files.
It supports all types of disks, including CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray. In addition, this DVD burning software contains SecurDisc 4.0 technology that allows you to protect your music from hackers and malicious malware thanks to the employed industry-standard 256-bit encryption, digital signatures, and password protection.

✔️ Smarter selection tools. Photoshop 2018 added better selection tools, like Select Subject, which uses AI to automatically find the main subject in your photo. This makes cutting out objects and doing detailed edits much quicker and easier, perfect for precise retouching work.
✔️ Enhanced brush performance. In 2018, the brush engine was upgraded, making brushes smoother and more responsive, particularly when used with pressure-sensitive tablets. This enhancement makes painting and detailed tasks feel more fluid and natural, reducing lag significantly.
✔️ New creative filters and features. Photoshop CC 2018 brought fresh tools and enhancements, including the Curvature Pen Tool and upgrades to the Liquify filter. These additions provide greater creative flexibility and precision, allowing users to manipulate images and craft distinctive effects with more control than ever before.
✔️ Better integration with the Adobe ecosystem. Photoshop 2018 made it easier to work with other Adobe apps, like Illustrator. It streamlined the process of transferring files between programs, helping users maintain a smooth and consistent workflow.
❌ Still a steep learning curve. Even though Photoshop version 2018 is more intuitive in many aspects, it’s still a complicated tool to use. New users might feel a bit overwhelmed at first, and it takes time to learn all the features. Watching tutorials is really helpful to get started.
❌ Subscription model only. Similar to other Adobe programs, Photoshop 2018 is only offered through a subscription model. This requires ongoing payments to access the software, which can be costlier than a single upfront purchase. Some users may wish for a one-time payment option instead.
After using Adobe Photoshop 2018, I noticed a few areas that could still use some improvement:
1. Performance with very large files. While the program functions better overall, Photoshop can still be slow when working with big files or projects that have lots of layers. Making these heavy tasks faster would be a big help for professionals.
2. File organization and asset management. Photoshop's built-in file management isn't the strongest. Better tools for organizing, tagging, and searching through large libraries of images and assets directly within Photoshop 2018 would streamline workflows, especially for big projects.
3. Customizable workspace options. The interface has become more user-friendly, but after testing, I feel that offering more flexibility to customize the workspace layout and tool setups would be a great addition. Giving users the ability to fully personalize Photoshop 2018 to match their unique workflow could significantly improve efficiency.
4. Improved collaboration features. In today’s world, teamwork is crucial. Adding features that make it easier to share projects, get feedback, and work together on files directly in Photoshop 2018 would be a great upgrade.
If you don’t have the opportunity to purchase the original Adobe product, you can activate Photoshop free trial or try free photo editing software for PC and Mac with similar features, which the whole FixThePhoto team tested and chose for you.
PhotoPad offers a user-friendly and stable experience. While testing it, I was impressed by the variety of features and tools it offers for skin correction. It offers options for color corrections, layers, and even some special effects. However, it’s worth noting that the program is strictly limited to personal and non-commercial use. So, if you're aiming to use it for professional projects or earning income, it might not be the best fit, but for casual editing tasks, downloading PhotoPad is a great idea.
I always advise RawTherapee as a completely free editing program for all beginners who ask about the best tool to start mastering photo editing while working at FixThePhoto. After downloading RawTherapee, you get everything you need for image color correction, histogram matching, and HDR tone mapping. It operates non-destructively, ensuring your original photos remain untouched. Although it may take some time to learn, it’s a powerful tool for anyone serious about diving into photo editing without breaking the bank.
Darktable is worth paying attention to. It is open-source and good for developing RAW images, just like Lightroom. Darktable offers a non-destructive editing workflow and strong color management, making it a great choice for photographers. Its organization, with modules for different tasks, may feel familiar to Lightroom users. While it’s not as well-known outside tech-savvy communities, it’s a robust and free RAW image processor for those looking for a powerful editing tool.
If you’re used to working with Photoshop 2018, you will notice that Pixlr has a similar interface and menu options. During my testing, I compared Pixlr to Photoshop 2018 and found that Pixlr offers a much safer and more user-friendly experience, even if it’s not as feature-rich and does not offer the cool brushes of the Adobe product. The most distinctive feature of Pixlr is that it is free and web-based, and with the help of its AI filters, you can do basic editing with your photos.
LightZone is another open-source software that lets you make adjustments with colors, white balance, and exposure. While it’s a lesser-known alternative, I personally tested this Photoshop free alternative for editing photos taken on my phone, and the results were surprisingly decent for a free tool. Yes, for sure, it lacks the advanced tools found in Photoshop 2018 and some other LightZone alternatives, but it still delivers solid performance for basic edits.
To boost your productivity and speed up your workflow in Photoshop 2018, you can download and install free actions. Together with the FixThePhoto team, I’ve selected the most relevant free filters for you to download and test below. These tools are completely free and safe, offering a great starting point for efficient photo editing.
I tested several actions specifically designed for food pics on various images, including vibrant salads, decadent desserts, and colorful pasta dishes. The results were impressive, adding just the right amount of pop to each photo while maintaining a natural look.
I highly recommend installing these Photoshop actions for bloggers, social media influencers, and even restaurant owners who want to create visually stunning content.
