That’s why I decided to share my experience with future parents and put together a list of newborn photographers I liked the most, to make it easier for other parents looking to arrange a comfortable, high-quality, and professional photoshoot for their little ones.

As I work not as a retoucher but as a content editor at FixThePhoto I pay special attention to photos – always. Especially, when I was looking for a photographer for my first newborn daughter's photoshoot. I think I was even overly critical compared to my wedding photoshoot.
Of course, first of all, I and my husband looked for a photographer who specializes in newborn photography and has plenty at least 3+ years of experience. It was important to us that he/she understands the challenges of working with newborns. A big part of that is using safe newborn photo posing techniques that won’t harm the baby’s physical development while creating a warm and secure environment.
I carefully look through the Insta portfolios of different artists to see if their style matched what we were looking for, usually examples and saved stories help to check it. We wanted to have the shoot at our country house so the baby would be comfortable. That’s why I focused on photographers who had beautiful and cozy home session photos in their portfolio and can work not only at specialized studios. In my opinion, a professional should be able to take high-quality photos in any setting because not everyone lives in bright, big windows apartments with trendy designs.
After that, I read reviews from previous clients to get a sense of the photographers' professionalism and quality of work, usually I try to find negative ones to make sure that it was just the matter of taste not some communication or other issues.
I even managed to connect with a client of one of the photographers I liked. She had done a newborn session for her son a few months back. She shared her detailed experience about how the photographer worked in their home and gave an honest review of her work, which really helped me make my decision.
My FixThePhoto colleagues recommended me to ask a potential photographer about portable lighting equipment and other necessary gear they could bring to our home for the shoot. I also really wanted to capture my daughter in those adorable outfits I saw on Pinterest like little animal costumes or characters from cartoons, with cute newborn photography props.
In my initial conversations with potential photographers, I made sure to ask if they use a specialized camera for newborn photos to ensure it operates quietly and won’t disturb the baby.
Besides professional skills, it was really important for me to choose a person who is patient and calm. Newborn sessions can take a long time and babies might cry or have trouble falling asleep, so having a patient photographer who can create a relaxed atmosphere from the first 15 minutes is key for both the infant and the parents.
A personal connection is also a must. From my experience interviewing photographers, I highly recommend meeting her/him beforehand, if possible, to see if you feel comfortable with that person.
Following the criteria above and my colleagues’ tips, my husband and I found an amazing newborn photographer, Kathleen Vergara, and the session turned out absolutely perfect. We felt completely comfortable inviting her to our home, (besides, she works in our state) and she instantly showed her competence by choosing the ideal spot in our apartment for the shoot. She brought a variety of adorable outfits for our little model, and we picked a few cozy and cute costumes together.
Kathleen was such a calm and pleasant woman to work with. During the session, our baby started crying and needed to eat, but Kathleen patiently waited without any rush and extra payments after the photoshoot. Everything ended up taking longer than we had initially planned, but she reassured us that timing is always flexible when it comes to newborn photography.
I’ve already received the edited photos, and they are absolutely stunning. I can’t wait to share them on my Facebook soon, though I’ll have to wait until my daughter turns one since my husband prefers not to share them earlier.
