Working as a household goods packaging designer, I have discovered that the old Adobe Illustrator CS6 version has an impressive choice of tools for designing layouts for packages and creating labels.
Using it, I can also create other types of product graphics as well, its extensive set of features and the fact that this vector graphics software also allows creating drawings is gorgeous.
In addition, it supports various color spaces, such as RGB and CMYK, which facilitates the process of creating digital and printed materials.
Though I am trying to understand how some of the program features work even today, I like it has enabled me to manipulate shapes, lines, and colors of the things that I can make. Further, Adobe provides in-depth user guides which are very resourceful for a person who wishes to know how to use the tools which Adobe Illustrator CS6 offers and also customize them for free and in any language.

Typography enhancements
I discovered that the recently added tabbing and navigation options in the Character panel are quite useful for working on complex label designs. I can switch between small caps and various typography elements with one click. It allows me to finish my projects more quickly and create professional-level designs for household goods packaging.
Extensive possibilities for working with gradients
I was glad to discover that Adobe Illustrator now allows for applying gradients to strokes. This option enables me to come up with more creative solutions working as a packaging designer. Using it, I create custom effects for labels and product graphics to ensure that my designs will make products more attention-grabbing and appeal to target clients.
Allows converting raster pictures into vector formats
The upgraded image tracing engine in Adobe Illustrator CS6 streamlines the tasks of converting raster files to vectors. It allows me to get vector images with seamless lines using various color schemes and complex details.
Moreover, this option enables me to create a responsive design of every element that looks the same in different sizes and formats. For instance, I can create designs for labels, advertising banners, or social media content.
Tools for creating patterns
The CS6 version has an awesome feature to make patterns, which quite helped me with automatizing my workflow in packaging. In it, I can convert any image to a tileable design that is awesome.
It makes the whole process of creating custom patterns and textures so much easier and I can design packages that are even look better and raise their quality. I don’t use any alternatives for Adobe Illustrator anymore that do support creating patterns.
Price & subscription model
As I work as a freelance packaging designer, I found Adobe Illustrator CS6 to be too expensive. As there are plenty of programs with comparable functionality for budget-conscious users, it’s difficult to find arguments in favor of buying Illustrator CS6 or paying for a subscription.
Difficult to master
Yes, I have more theoretical knowledge in this area and just simple hands-on experience with design, but again I still managed to have some issues trying to use several tools. It can somehow be unfriendly to a beginner. Also, I was really much surprised to find out that system requirements in the Adobe Illustrator CS6 version are higher than in the latest version. And you need quite a powerful configuration of the software and a second monitor for photo editing to work with it comfortably.
