Adobe Illustrator 28.6 Cracked My Vision of Vector Design

The new version of Adobe Illustrator 28.6 redefines what’s possible in vector design It has smarter tools, a nicer UI, and new features like the Intertwine tool and 3D effects. Whether you're creating detailed drawings or professional designs, this update is made to help everyone be creative.

Me and my coworker Ann, who loves Adobe, tried out the new Illustrator for a big design project at FixThePhoto. We created colorful marketing materials, like drawings and cool text layouts. We used the new features, which included better gradient tools and easier teamwork in the cloud and noticed how simple everything felt compared to the older version.

Before this, I used Adobe Illustrator CC 2020 a lot. It worked well, but for me, it was quite tricky to manage complicated shapes and get everything perfectly lined up even though I’ve been working with design tools for a long time and wouldn’t call myself a beginner. This new version fixes those issues and adds ways to be creative.

Advantages

Perfectly woven designs. The Intertwine tool in this vector graphic software became my favorite for creating overlapping effects. Instead of spending a long time fixing paths by hand, I used it to make text weave through vector patterns. It saved us so much time and made our designs look professional, which is useful for a logo where the weaving had to look perfect.

Rich gradients. The new gradient tools in Adobe Illustrator changed how we added depth to our graphics. For some banners, I used the freeform gradient tool to add soft lighting effects, making everything look more realistic. I could adjust each color exactly how I wanted, which made the designs look colorful.

3D effects. While making text designs for our project, the updated 3D tools were outstanding. I added 3D effects with shadows and lighting that I could see and adjust in real time, letting me try new ideas easily and create bold text that stood out as the star of our designs.

Easy teamwork in real time. With Adobe Illustrator’s Share for Review tool, we got feedback directly on our designs without sending lots of emails, saving time and helping our team meet deadlines faster by making quick changes.

Unique text styles. The better Variable Fonts and free Adobe fonts offer a lot of options for customizing text. I could adjust font sizes, weights, and styles to make headings and body text look the way we need. This made it easy to try various font combinations and keep our designs matching with other marketing materials.

Disadvantages

Harder to learn for beginners. Adobe Illustrator has amazing tools, but it can feel tricky and confusing if you’re new to it. Ann and I had to spend extra time helping our teammate, who was new to Illustrator, figure out how to use it. Learning how to use the pen tool was harder than we thought and slowed us down a bit at first.

Slower with big projects. When we worked on really detailed designs, like large illustrations, the program sometimes got a bit laggy. Even on a fast computer, adding lots of effects to complicated shapes made our workflow slower, which can be frustrating if you are on tight deadlines.

File sharing problems. Even though Illustrator works with many file types, sharing files with people who don’t use Adobe was problematic. One of our clients couldn’t open the AI files, so we had to spend extra time converting them to PDF format to make it work for them.

What Still Needs to Be Upgraded After Testing?

After using Adobe Illustrator for our project, I noticed a few things that could make the software even better:

  • Handling resource-heavy projects. Illustrator works great most of the time, but when I used detailed designs with lots of layers, it sometimes slowed down. If it ran smoother with heavy files, it would save a lot of time.
  • Make tools easier for beginners. Some tools, like the pen tool and freeform gradients, are super useful but can feel hard to learn at first. Adding more Adobe Illustrator tutorials or tips right in the app would help new users figure things out faster.
  • Better collaboration tools. The Share for Review tool is nice, but it would be better if people could work on the same file at the same time, like in other Adobe apps. This would make it easier for teams to collaborate.
  • Easier plugin management. There are so many cool plugins but managing them isn’t very easy. A built-in tool to organize, update, or remove plugins would make it way less frustrating.

Free Alternatives

Adobe Illustrator is exceptional for vector design, but I wanted to try some Adobe Illustrator alternatives to see how they work. While the other programs don’t have all the advanced features Adobe Illustrator has, they’re still great options, especially if you’re looking for something more budget-friendly.

Inkscape is a free tool that’s the closest competitor to Illustrator. It has some strong tools for editing paths and cool filters, but it doesn’t look as advanced as Illustrator and doesn’t connect with Creative Cloud. Also, it doesn’t have Illustrator’s easy Intertwine tool, which is great for overlapping designs.

I also compared Illustrator vs Gravit Designer, and I discovered that it is a great software for simple designs. The program works online, so you can use it anywhere, but since it’s cloud-based, you can’t use it offline, which can be frustrating. Nonetheless, it’s easy to use and excellent for small projects.

Vectr is beginner-friendly, so it’s great if you’re just starting. But, because of this, it doesn’t have advanced features like 3D tools or freeform gradients, so it’s not the best choice for professional work. Adobe Illustrator, on the other hand, is much better for detailed designs like the ones Ann and I worked on.

Last but not least, I looked at Affinity Designer. It isn’t free, but it’s much cheaper than Illustrator since you only pay once instead of a monthly subscription. Although the software is fast and has great tools, it doesn’t work with other Adobe apps or have as many plugins, which makes it less useful if you use other Adobe software for your projects.

Each of these programs has good things about it, but after trying them, I realized how much I actually like Illustrator. It’s powerful, flexible, and works perfectly with other Adobe apps. Nonetheless, if you’re just starting or working on smaller projects, these alternatives are worth checking out.
