The NCH developers released Debut Video Capture 7.59, the most recent version that stands out for its ease of use, efficiency, and accessibility. The program has an improved interface, supports more formats than the previous version, and delivers a stable performance during video capturing. It’s an excellent option for streamers, educators, and content creators who work on video tutorials.

Working as a content creator at the FixThePhoto team, I had an opportunity to test Debut Video Capture 7.59 to record desktop walkthroughs, add overlay webcam commentary when recording Zoom calls, and perform other tasks. Unlike Debut Video Capture 6.47, the newest version allows users to access a real-time preview and customize hotkeys.

Advantages

Consistent performance on older hardware. I was surprised that Debut Video Capture 7.59 ran without any issues on my old Windows laptop. Unlike more resource-intensive apps that are often lag and crash, this recording software for low end PC maintained high responsiveness even when I was recording full-screen HD tutorial videos without any overheating or frame drops.

Convenient screen and webcam recording. Using this software, I can quickly capture the content of the screen with the help of the webcam overlay. It makes it perfect for recording reaction videos or live commentary. With it, I created an informative how-to guide with my face in the corner. It was easy to adjust the position of the webcam window without using any extra plugins.

Supports scheduled recordings. I was impressed by the tools to schedule recordings. I used them to automatically record a webinar. When using most free recording software, you will rarely find this feature.

Intuitive format and quality presets. The full version of Debut Video Capture 7.59 comes with handy export presets, which allow users to quickly save videos with specific resolution, FPS, and encoder. I was pleased that I could record videos in MP4 for YouTube or AVI for archival purposes without configuring export settings every time.

Low-latency capture for real-time tasks. When testing gameplay recordings and demo videos showing how to use various programs, I discovered that there was virtually no delay between what happened on the screen and what was being captured. This no lag screen recorder runs smoothly even without GPU acceleration.

Disadvantages

Outdated interface design. Debut Video Capture 7.59 looks as if it were built in 2010. Even though it has impressive functionality, its UI is difficult to navigate. I often had to spend too much time switching between different tabs to adjust the settings.

No integrated editor. After recording a video, it’s impossible to trim it, cut it, or add annotations. I had to open the footage in third-party software to remove a few seconds I did not need. Basic trimming tools would have helped me optimize my workflow.

Limited multi-monitor support. As I often use a dual-monitor setup, I was disappointed that the program only recognizes one screen. Besides, when I try to switch screens in the middle of recording, it causes issues.

What Needs Improvement in Debut Video Capture

After testing Debut Video Capture 7.59 for a week, I discovered that there was still room for improvement. The developers can focus on the following tasks to cater to the needs of creative professionals who use this software:

debut video capture interface
  1. Add tools for configuring audio settings. The current version does not allow users to adjust many mic input settings. When recording a tutorial, I couldn’t diminish background fan noise. It would be nice to have an integrated noise filter or volume normalization settings to improve the quality of spoken content.
  2. Make it easier to customize the webcam overlay settings. Even though the program allows users to record screen with webcam overlay, there are no customization options available. It would be great to configure opacity, add borders, or apply basic effects without using third-party software.
  3. Cloud integration and sharing. The program stores files locally. It’s impossible to automatically upload files to Google Drive or Dropbox after a recording session. Many content creators would appreciate automated sharing tools and regular backups.

Free Alternatives

You can use a free version of Debut Video Capture 7.59 without paying a dime. However, its functionality is limited. If you want to advance your career and work on complex projects, you can find a program with an extensive set of editing tools, convenient export options, and a modern interface. Take a closer look at these five free alternatives that I have personally tested.

Download OBS Studio if you are looking for free recording software for streaming. Unlike Debut Video Capture 7.59, it allows users to switch between scenes, add real-time transitions, and use plugins. I prefer to work in OBS when I need to adjust the settings of my overlays and perform audio mixing. While it’s difficult to master, it gives you more control over the process.

ShareX is a great option for those who are looking for a simple screen recorder with handy automation tools. While it does not have a webcam overlay, it supports automated uploading, scrolling capture, and hotkey customization. I prefer it over Debut when I need to quickly capture the screen content and record short tutorials. It does not have any lag.

Screencast-O-Matic has a free version that is suitable for quickly record explainer videos or webcam lectures. It comes with basic trimming tools, allows users to add captions, and has a ready-to-use webcam overlay. Unlike Debut, it has a more streamlined interface. However, the free download version allows you to record videos that are up to 15 minutes long.

FlashBack Express has a free version with impressive functionality. Using it, I was able to capture the screen and webcam together. Besides, it has easy-to-use scheduling tools and doesn’t add watermarks to your videos. Even though Debut has similar tools, FlashBack has a more intuitive UI and export presets. I recommend this open source screen recorder to capture training sessions.

Download Bandicam for free if you are looking for screen recorder software with powerful performance. Keep in mind that the free version supports limited recording length and adds a watermark. It’s an excellent screen recorder for games as it has no lag. When testing both programs side by side, I noticed that Bandicam delivered a faster performance than Debut.
