Advantages

Fast and smooth performance. PowerDirector 15 Ultimate's TrueVelocity 6 engine performed noticeably better, especially considering rendering and playback speed. During testing, I observed significantly smoother 4K preview playback with minimal stuttering. Exports completed faster than in older versions, particularly when leveraging GPU acceleration. These optimizations proved especially valuable when handling complex timelines with numerous clips and effects, improving my editing workflow efficiency.

360° editing features. PowerDirector 15 makes editing 360° videos easy, even for beginners. The built-in stabilizer fixes shaky footage, and you can add cool titles and effects made just for 360° videos. I especially like that this fun effect gave my footage a distinctive, polished look.

Motion tracking for dynamic edits. The motion tracking tool saved me tons of time. Just pick an object, and PowerDirector 15 follows it for you: no need to adjust every little movement manually. It is great for highlighting objects, callouts, or blurring faces in videos. While it often fails to handle super-fast action, it worked well for the majority of clips!

User-friendly interface. PowerDirector 15 Ultimate Suite is still easy to use, whether you're new to editing or have experience. The Express Projects feature lets you quickly make videos by dropping clips into ready-made templates. The Color Match tool is also handy, as it helps make colors look consistent across different clips without trouble.

Blending modes for creative effects. The introduction of blending modes allows crafting professional-looking cinematic overlays, double exposures, and light leak effects right within the software without using extra programs. This really opened up new creative options, particularly for music videos, promotional content, and artistic edits. It was an easy-to-use feature that upgraded my effects options considerably.

Disadvantages

Limited audio editing options. PowerDirector 15 improved in many ways, but its audio tools are still basic. The noise reduction isn't as good as dedicated audio software. The Audio Ducking feature helps balance voice and music but often overdoes it, so manual fixes were still required.

Occasional crashes with large projects. While editing complex multi-layer projects in this video editing software for Windows, I did run into occasional crashes. Thankfully, the auto-save feature secured my files, though losing some progress was still annoying. Performance was smooth on my high-end desktop (thanks to a strong GPU), but my cheaper laptop struggled, especially with 4K footage, where rendering speeds could decrease considerably.

Limited advanced color grading. CyberLink PowerDirector 15 Ultimate now offers better color correction tools, but it still couldn’t match the pro-level options of DaVinci Resolve. The Color Match feature was handy for quick fixes, but for serious editing like tweaking curves, applying LUTs, or fine-tuning shadowsб I needed extra plugins.

What Needs Improvement in PowerDirector 15

Based on my experience, here are a few areas where CyberLink could enhance the software:

  1. More advanced audio editing tools. The software would benefit from professional audio features like an equalizer and noise reduction tool, eliminating the need for separate audio programs.
  2. Better stability for large projects. Better optimization for complex 4K projects and multi-track timelines would prevent crashes and streamline editing.
  3. Enhanced color grading capabilities. Adding pro-level tools like RGB curves, secondary color correction, and improved LUT controls would help PowerDirector rival high-end editing software.
  4. More AI-powered features. Smart features like auto-scene detection, AI-powered noise removal, and auto-reframing for social media could significantly speed up workflows.

Free Alternatives

Looking for a free alternative to PowerDirector 15? There are several capable options that deliver robust editing features at no cost. While these alternatives might lack some advanced capabilities like 360° editing or hardware-accelerated effects, they’re more than sufficient for everyday personal or professional video projects.

One of the most feature-rich editors I’ve tested is DaVinci Resolve free version. The free edition includes advanced color correction, Fusion effects, and multi-cam support – the functionality comparable to paid suites. However, Resolve’s interface is less intuitive than PowerDirector’s, and system requirements are significantly higher. For editors prioritizing power over ease of use, it’s an unmatched free solution.

HitFilm Express is another impressive free option, especially for VFX enthusiasts. It offers built-in compositing, pro-level transitions, and even cinematic effects, which are pro-level features found in paid software. Unlike PowerDirector 15, its free version includes motion tracking, which is a real bonus. However, pay attention to the fact that you’ll need to register to use it, and certain premium effects require paid add-ons.

Shotcut free is an open-source editor featuring a customizable timeline, broad file compatibility, and watermark-free exports. A standout advantage over PowerDirector 15 is its unrestricted keyframe animation tools - features that often require PowerDirector’s paid Ultimate version. That said, Shotcut’s dated interface and steeper learning curve may challenge newcomers.

If you're looking for a simple and lightweight editor, OpenShot is a solid pick. Its intuitive drag-and-drop functionality and unlimited layers make it ideal for beginners. Though it can't compete with PowerDirector 15's speed or effects library, it does include handy features like basic keyframing and 3D animations, at absolutely no cost. The only drawback is that it tends to lag with high-res footage.

VSDC Free version delivers a non-linear workflow with handy built-in tools like chroma key, transitions, and color correction. It’s more efficient for older or weaker PCs, which is a key reason to download it instead of PowerDirector 15. However, its dated interface and paid advanced export options may frustrate some users. Though for straightforward projects needing quick effects, it remains a worthy free solution.
