Adobe Premiere has been around for nearly 30 years. During this time, the company has released more than 15 Adobe Premiere versions. The initial software was completely different from the functional and powerful Premiere Pro that we use today.

Premiere’s Early Versions for Mac

Talking about Adobe Premiere versions, we can conditionally divide them into 2 groups – earlier and modern ones. But firsts things first!

Premiere 1.0

The oldest version of this program was introduced in December 1991. It was based on ReelTime and was one of the first computer non-linear editing systems, the first version of which was released on Mac in 1991.

Premiere 2.0

Adobe Premiere 2.0 was released in September 1992. In addition to the support of QuickTime video and audio capture, the developers introduced new features such as capturing titles, Sequence creation, and Construction windows. Also, the second version pleased users with the support for slowdown/acceleration of motion and the possibility to use the SMTPE timecode.

Premiere 3.0

Users got access to Adobe Premiere 3.0 in August 1993. The key features of this edition if compared to other Adobe Premiere versions are support for 99x stereo audio tracks, 97x video tracks, a video signal from the monitor, subpixel movement and rendering area.

Besides, it became possible to work with video capture cards: Sigma Designs "MovieMovie" and SuperMac Spigot Tape II.

Premiere 4.0

Adobe Co. kept improving the software and presented their development in July 1993. It allowed users to overlay 97x video tracks and x2 tracks for transitions, had a trim window (Trim window), as well as dynamic preview, acceleration and deceleration filters, supported custom filter editing and creation of transitions.

Premiere Early Versions for Windows

Premiere 1.0

The first version for Microsoft Windows appeared in September 1993. It supported 24-bit AVI video formats, QuickTime, Autodesk Animator, such audio formats as AVI, AIFF, and WAV, and image formats – Photoshop, BMP, DIB, PICT, PCX, TIFF.

However, if compare Windows and Mac Adobe Premiere versions released at that time, it becomes obvious that the former is less powerful because it lacked the support of EDL, entitling, motion and other handy controls.

Premiere 1.1

The worldwide community saw this version in February 1994. It stands out with several improvements – the AdobeCap video capture module, support for advanced graphics and audio files, and the possibility to work with TARGA and ADPCM files.

Premiere 4.2

A serious point in the history of Adobe Premiere was the release of Adobe Premiere 4.2 in April 1996. This version had a 32-bit architecture (support for Windows 95 and NT operating systems), support for long file names, 4K resolution, a right mouse button and an uninstaller.

Premiere 5.0

May 1998 is known as the month when the 5.0 version was created. It ran on Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS platforms. It was remade from scratch with a new engine and a simpler interface that reduced clutter on the screen.

It was one of the most popular Adobe Premiere versions in the 10-year time range, because it allowed watching videos on 2 monitors - Source and Program.

However, this version has several defects. Since the engine was rewritten from scratch, it required more testing to function perfectly. All the results of the rush were fixed in the Adobe Premiere 5.1 update, which was released in October of the same year.

Premiere 6.0

Premiere 6.5

Premiere Pro 1.5 was released in May 2004 as a version that was more stable than its predecessor, PPRO. It included several minor additions and didn’t suffer from the bugs that interfere with the workflow in earlier Adobe Premiere versions.

Premiere Pro 2.0

January 2006 marked the appearance of the 2.0 version. It had a new interface and many handy features such as DVD burning, multi-camera editing, timeline scrolling, improved color grading, GPU accelerated processing, native HD/HDV support, and better integration with other Adobe applications.

The developers added new integration commands – Edit in Adobe Audition and Edit in Adobe Photoshop. Besides, users received a new feature called Adobe Clip Notes, which allowed including video in a PDF document, for example, to send it by e-mail to a client, or for viewing with comments tied to timecode.

Premiere CS3

Premiere CS5

Released in April 2010, the Mercury Playback Engine became an important addition. It allowed for previewing without rendering. It was allowed to combine metadata with Adobe Story and Adobe OnLocation CS5.

This version has improved face recognition and Speech Search. They also added a direct export option, bypassing Adobe Media Encoder CS5.

Premiere CS6

Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 was released in 2012. The program received a new user interface. Now, the two windows, Source and Program, are placed at the top of the interface by default. All other palettes are arranged at the bottom of the interface.

Users were pleased with the access to Adobe Prelude, SpeedGrade, and Adobe Creative Cloud. This was the last revision available for purchase as a standalone software package. Adobe developers fixed bugs that affect performance, and keep moving in the direction of CC.

This was the first version of PPRO that was only available through the Creative Cloud subscription service.
