Speed depends on a WiFi standard: old 802.11a/b/g versions offer speed up to 54 Mbps, 802.11n – up to 600 Mbps, and a newer 802.11ac – up to 6.77 Gb/s. It also depends on the presence of interference (walls, other devices), a range, type of extender (one, two, or three-band).
But even if the speed is up to 600 Mbps, you will receive a maximum of 50-60% of the claimed value. By increasing the distance between a receiver and a transmitter, as well as interference on the signal way, this value may become lower. Therefore, we recommend choosing extenders with a greater speed – 1200 Mbps and higher for gaming.
Modern access points offer several types of encryption standards: WEP was the first to appear, but we don’t recommend using it due to unreliability. WPA and WPA2 have better algorithms nowadays. The best WiFi extender for gaming has WPA/WPA2 support.
All modern access points use this standard since it’s more difficult to hack. However, the more characters (letters, numbers) are there in your password, the better. High-end models offer other ways to protect access, for example, using personal certificates.
Most plug-based extenders have one or two Ethernet ports. Extenders that are based on desktops, can have up to five Ethernet ports. It is highly suitable for devices with no Wi-Fi support, such as an old desktop computer, a printer, an IP camera, and some outdated console models.
Budget models offer limited speed (to 100 Mbps) of a wired connection through Ethernet. More expensive models use ports with 1Gbit/s bandwidth, which is necessary to access the Internet on the tariffs over 100 Mbps and for organizing a quick wired or wireless LAN.
RSSI is used to measure the power of a Wi-Fi signal. It shows the maximum power of a signal received by a receiver and is measured in dBm. RSSI value varies from 0 to -100dBm. The higher the RSSI value (closer to 0), the stronger the signal. The closer to -100 the value, the weaker the signal.
A good WiFi signal is usually over -65dBm. Excellent performance ranges from 35 to -50dbm, good indicators are from -50 to -65dBm. At lower power, you’ll experience poor connection speed, packet loss, and data retransmission.
