What is Blender?

blender interface

Blender comes with a lot of user-created filters that you can use to make your pictures look like a million dollars. This powerful feature is definitely one of the reasons why my clients ask me to get the Blender package installed in their office.

Blender also features a powerful animation tool called the "gore pencil", which allows you to apply many different post-rendition effects to your images or photographs. The gore pencil is perfect for making backgrounds, but the way it renders the color is actually by using a combination of Color Correction, Color Effects, Brush Strokes and Gradient Maps. These effects make the final image look like nothing less than a masterpiece.

In addition to all of the above mentioned features, Blender also features some unique features that don't really fit under the category of "effects". For example, the undo function allows you to go back to the initial render to fix a specific problem or error. And because the render engine has baked in support for Photoshop files, I can crop photos with the Cropping tool from within the editor.

What is ZBrush?

zbrush interface

ZBrush has an extensive library of brushes, that give you many options for editing and creating new textures. You can import textures from other 3d modeling software, or you can make your own. By modifying the brushes that are currently in the ZBrush memory, you can change the way that the software sculpts and shaves the model.

When you are modeling in ZBrush, you can add textures and materials to your meshes using one of several ways that ZBrush allows. One way that this software allows you to add material is by exporting a mesh as a Tga file, which is a bitmap image.

The one thing that you may find in ZBrush that is different from Blender is that the program allows you to edit shaders at the same time that you edit textures. So instead of looking at two different images and trying to blend them together using other programs, you can do it in ZBrush in just a few seconds. You can select the shape and then apply it to the mesh by dragging and dropping it on the mesh.

FixThePhoto Choice:

If you're a novice in the design industry and searching for simple and free software with maximum functionality, Blender is definitely the right software for you.

While ZBrush is really impressive with its detailed sculpting settings, it is too narrowly focused and costs a lot of money.
