The makers of TrueCrypt recently released version 7.1a with several new improvements. This release includes a bundled patch from the United Kingdom, which fixes several critical security issues including a denial of access to shared folders by default. In fact TrueCrypt was one of the most heavily used pass-the-shell programs in home user computing environment until the recent release of Windows XP, which replaced it as the de facto choice for system and work group administration.
A free download of TrueCrypt is what started this whole affair off. But the problem with this being free came after the fact when many developers, designers and technicians saw the potential of the open source TrueCrypt as a free cryptosystem replacement. Because TrueCrypt was designed to be an easy to use software application, these hackers saw a window of opportunity to take advantage of TrueCrypt lack of password protection.
