AIM was an instant messenger and presence enabled software created by AOL, that used the proprietary OSCRAM instant messaging protocol and the TOC Protocol to enable registered users to chat in real time over the internet. AOL had patented the OSCRAM protocol, which is what TIVA (The Internet Message Access Protocol) used. The goal was to create a way for computer users to have an efficient method for sending and receiving data, without worrying about the distance or time delay that would be experienced by dial-up connections.
With the invention of AIM and its use of the TIVA protocol, there emerged what is known today as Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP. This technology enabled voice communication to be sent across long distances and at high speeds. AIM also paved the way for other technologies such as IM, which stands for International Mobile Equipment, to be implemented. The invention of software and other applications for the purpose of video conferencing has also been aided by AIM.
