The Unarchiver is a free, commercial software application, that supports many more archive formats than just archive utility, the built in file unpacker app in OS X. It is able to handle filenames in different character encoding, encoded using different operating system releases which use these character encoding. To extract a folder from a PDF file, you only need to pass the command "tar -f" to unarchiver and the resulting PDF file will be extracted without the need of Adobe's software.
The Unarchiver software is available as freeware under the GNU General Public License, or any other suitable free software license. It was created by J. Williame van Steen, who also developed the FileZilla software that handles the same task. He used the libraries and scripts from the Adobe Portable Runtime Environment (APR), which are freely available on the Adobe website, as the starting point of the unarchiver. Almost all other parts of the software are based on the code from the APR, which is under the GNU General Public License.
