As of June 5th, 2020, the new free version of TiVo Desktop no longer works with the old versions of the operating system that came with the original TiVo. If you already own an older copy of the free edition of TiVo Desktop then it will still function properly, nothing has changed from what was available in the past. New TiVo Desktop subscribers can immediately purchase TiVo Desktop plus to fully utilize all of the available features of the upgraded version.
One of the most obvious pros to purchasing the upgraded version is the increased functionality. In addition to being able to watch your live and recorded television shows directly on your PC using the new Windows Live Writer software interface, users will also be able to view their DVR recordings in their homes on their PC using their TiVo connected PC or notebook. These recordings can then be played right on your TiVo Satellite receiver as an audio stream.
